This mindful class will help you to build a relationship with the Taoist five elements of Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal through dance, ritual, and prayer. You will bring attention to and express opposing and dual aspects of your being through movement and your felt sense.
You will learn how to create a smoother more balanced flow of qi (life force energy) in the energy channels of your body known as meridians. This supports well-being and healing.
Dancing the Five Elements is a somatic way to intentionally connect you back to your body, psyche, and soul. It will help you sustain and build vitality and a fuller expression of the different aspects of your being.
This is an inclusive, trauma-informed class that welcomes and celebrates diversity in all forms.
We’ll dedicate one week to each element for five weeks then have one longer session where we’ll connect with all five elements.
Please email email@example.com if you have any questions.
In this session, the focus is on the Fire element and its spirit, Shen, which is associated with presence, awareness, consciousness, and self-reflection. Your ability to be engaged in life in a coherent and inspired way. You’ll help to balance your expression of Fire so you have a good sense of contentment and self-identity.
In this session, the focus is on the Wood element and its spirit, Hun, which is associated with dreams, creativity, imagination, and growth. Your ability to have a vision for your life and then take action on it in a consistent, flexible, and discerning way. You’ll help to balance your expression of Wood so you have a sense of purpose in your life and live in a benevolent way.
In this session, the focus is on the Earth element and its spirit, Yi, which is associated with intention, devotion, clear thought, accountability, and integrity. Your ability to keep your word and cultivate your true purpose through committed action and perseverance so it can come to harvest. You’ll help to balance your expression of Earth so you will be able to better listen to your own voice and let go of ideas and feelings that no longer nourish you.
In this session, the focus is on the Metal element and its spirit, Po, which is associated with embodiment, appreciation, sensation, and intuitive knowing. Your ability to discover the value of each moment and be with the natural rhythms of life. You’ll help to balance your expression of Metal so you can come into a more conscious relationship with your body and nurture a sense of inner solidity.
In this session, the focus is on the Water element and its spirit, Zhi, which is associated with wisdom, courage, will, and resilience. Your ability to surrender to the Tao and the natural course of the Universe. You’ll help to balance your expression of Water so you connect with the deepest structures of your body and being.
In these longer 90-minute sessions, we’ll dance to all five elements.
